Safety Tip Tuesday: OSHA’s Requirements for Self-Retracting Lifelines

It’s Safety Tip Tuesday! Are your employees trained properly according to OSHA? When using Self-Retracting Lifelines (SRLs) on commercial jobsites, OSHA requires that they meet the criteria outlined in 29 CFR 1926.502, which governs fall protection systems. SRLs must be part of a comprehensive fall protection plan and be anchored to a secure point capable of supporting at least 5,000 pounds per employee attached. Additionally, SRLs must limit free fall distance to two feet or less and be inspected before each use for signs of damage or wear. Employers are responsible for ensuring SRLs are used according to the manufacturer’s instructions and are suitable for the specific work environment, including considerations for leading-edge applications. Proper training on SRL use, maintenance, and emergency procedures is essential to meet compliance and keep workers safe at heigh.
